Boox Takes on Kindle with New Go 7 Devices Featuring Handwriting and Google Play

Boox has introduced two new e-reader devices that aim to compete directly with popular models like the Kindle and Kobo. The new models — the Boox Go 7 and the Boox Go Color 7 (2nd Gen) — feature a sleek design similar to the Kindle Oasis, but with upgraded tech under the hood, including Android 13 and support for Google Play Store apps.

For the first time in this series, Boox is offering handwriting support, made possible by a separate $46 stylus called the InkSense Pen. This pen supports 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, includes a side button for extra functions, and charges via USB-C.

Display and Color Technology

The Go Color 7 features E Ink Kaleido 3, the same color display technology found in the Kobo Libra Colour and the more recent Kindle Colorsoft e-reader. This means it can display color content at 150 pixels per inch (ppi) and sharper black-and-white text at 300 ppi.

Meanwhile, the standard Go 7 uses a monochrome Carta 1300 screen, delivering crisp black-and-white visuals at 300 ppi. Both displays are designed for easy reading in various lighting conditions.

Design and Build

Both devices feature an asymmetrical shape with physical page-turn buttons on one side — a design made popular by the now-discontinued Kindle Oasis. The wide bezel provides a comfortable grip for one-handed use, and the textured back helps prevent slips. To top it off, both models are water-repellent, offering basic protection against spills or light rain.

Each device includes 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and microSD support for expanded storage. Audio is available through built-in speakers or via Bluetooth for wireless headphones. Both weigh just 195 grams, making them light enough for long reading sessions.

Software and App Support

One big advantage of Boox e-readers is their Android-based system. With the Google Play Store built in, users can connect to any e-book store — not just Boox. Whether it’s Kindle, Kobo, Libby, or another reading app, it’s all available. You can also install note-taking tools, web browsers, email apps, and more. However, due to the nature of E Ink screens, video playback is not recommended.
