Amazon announced a redesigned Kindle lineup on October 1, 2026. It includes a new 6-inch Kindle in plastic and aluminum, a new Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition, and refreshed Colorsoft models. The basic Kindle is on sale now. The Paperwhite and Colorsoft models are on preorder and ship October 28.
Alongside the new Kindle e-readers, Amazon introduced two different ways to turn pages without tapping the screen: a handheld Bluetooth remote called Kindle Click, and a Page-Turn Cover with built-in buttons.
That split matters. The new Kindle 2026 lineup will suit some buyers. For many current owners, though, the most useful addition may be an accessory rather than a replacement reader.
This analysis is based on Amazon’s announcement and published specifications; 9to5Kindle has not tested the new devices or accessories.
What Amazon announced, at a glance
Each reader now comes in a standard version and a pricier aluminum version with 32 GB of storage. The two accessories differ sharply in compatibility.
| Product | Main distinction | US price | Availability |

| Kindle (6-inch, aluminum) | Aluminum back; 32 GB; no ads | $189.99 | On sale now |
| Kindle Paperwhite | 7-inch, waterproof, warm light; 16 GB; lock-screen ads | $199.99 | Preorder; ships Oct. 28 |
| Paperwhite Signature Edition | Aluminum back, 32 GB, auto-adjusting light, pogo-pin dock charging; no ads | $249.99 | Preorder; ships Oct. 28 |

The new body colors are an exterior finish, not a display feature. Only the Colorsoft models have a color screen.
Kindle Click could be the useful upgrade for existing owners
Kindle Click is Amazon’s first official Kindle remote. It is a small Bluetooth clicker with large forward and back buttons on the front, plus smaller side buttons for brightness, according to TechRadar’s look at the hardware. It charges over USB-C, GeekWire reports.
Compatibility is the key point. Amazon says the remote works with all new Kindle devices and any Kindle model from 2024 or later. A 2024 Paperwhite owner, for example, may not need a new reader at all.
The use cases are easy to picture:
- Reading with the Kindle propped on a stand or tray table.
- Turning pages with hands tucked under a blanket.
- Avoiding repeated reaches toward the screen during a treadmill session.
Third-party page turners have filled this gap for years. Some pair over Bluetooth; others clip onto the screen and use their own wireless link. Kindle Click is the first option Amazon built and supports.
Amazon has not said whether older supported Kindles need a software update to pair with it.
Before buying: Check the Kindle model and release year against Amazon’s compatibility list. Any Kindle model with a Bluetooth feature does not make it compatible with the new Kindle Click by default.
The Page-Turn Cover brings attached buttons—with restrictions
The Page-Turn Cover is not a remote. It is a magnetic case with physical page-forward and page-back buttons built into a bar along the right edge. Amazon says it attaches magnetically and connects through pogo pins, which TechSpot notes sit on the back of the Signature models. TechRadar reports that the button bar also duplicates the power button.
The restriction is significant. The Page-Turn Cover works only with the new Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition. It does not support the standard Paperwhite, the 6-inch Kindle, or any older model.
Amazon has not said whether the cover has its own battery. Its pogo-pin connection suggests it may draw power from the Kindle, but that is unconfirmed.
Readers who miss the Kindle Oasis should note that this cover does not recreate that model’s asymmetric shape or one-handed balance. Whether it feels comfortable over long sessions will take hands-on testing to answer.
The new 6-inch Kindle adds a premium option
For readers who prioritize a pocketable device, the 6-inch Kindle remains the obvious starting point. Both versions now have a flush front, with no raised border around the screen.
The $40 gap between the two versions buys more than metal. The aluminum model doubles storage to 32 GB and drops lock-screen ads. It is not lighter, though: Engadget reports it weighs about 20 grams more than the plastic version.
Neither version gains the Paperwhite’s waterproofing or adjustable warm light. Anyone who reads in the bath or late at night should weigh those features before paying for aluminum. A comparison of Kindle Basic versus Paperwhite covers that trade-off in more detail.
Both 6-inch models are supported by Kindle Click. Neither works with the Page-Turn Cover.
Paperwhite or Signature Edition? Look at the complete setup
The standard Kindle Paperwhite 2026 model costs $199.99 with 16 GB and lock-screen ads. The Paperwhite Signature Edition costs $249.99 and adds an aluminum back, 32 GB of storage, no ads, an auto-adjusting front light, double-tap to turn pages, and pogo-pin charging. Amazon’s announcement lists dock charging through those pins; it does not mention Qi wireless charging, which earlier Signature Editions offered.
Those pins are what make the accessory story different. Only the Signature Edition works with the Page-Turn Cover and Amazon’s $59.99 Charging Dock.
For a reader who wants buttons attached to a Paperwhite, the real cost looks like this:
- Paperwhite Signature Edition alone: $249.99
- Paperwhite Signature Edition + Page-Turn Cover: $329.98 before tax
The cover is sold separately. Because the standard Paperwhite includes ads and less storage, the $50 base difference is not a like-for-like comparison.
The Colorsoft Signature Edition, at $319.99, is the only other supported model. With the cover, that setup comes to $399.98 before tax. For broader advice, see 9to5Kindle’s guide to choosing the right Kindle.

What this means for current Kindle owners
This advice is based on announced features and compatibility only.
- If your Kindle is from 2024 or later and you like it, look at Kindle Click before replacing the reader. At $34.99, it may solve the actual problem.
- If you want buttons attached to the device, budget for a Signature Edition plus the $79.99 cover. The standard Paperwhite will not work.
- If this is your first Kindle, compare core reading features such as screen size, warm light, and waterproofing before paying for aluminum or accessories.
- If your Kindle predates 2024, do not assume either accessory will work. Neither is listed as compatible.
Prices on the new hardware match levels Amazon set after its August increase. Readers who are not in a hurry can track the latest Kindle deals here.
The launch is unusual because it offers readers different paths to the same goal. Some will want new hardware. Others may find that a small accessory changes how they read more than a new screen would.
