Amazon announced that it is cutting around 100 jobs in its devices and services division, a move the retail giant said reflects efforts to streamline its corporate workforce. Among the affected are those working with the Alexa voice assistant as well as the Kindle range of e-reader devices.
“As part of our ongoing work to make our teams and programs operate more efficiently and to better align with our product road map, we’ve made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles. We don’t make these decisions lightly, and we’re committed to supporting affected employees through their transitions,” said Kristy Schmidt, spokeswoman for Amazon.
Prior to this, we have seen Amazon lay off some employees working in the communication division in January 2025. The company employs around 1.56 million workers, including both full-time and part-time workers. However, the bulk of it is comprised of hourly wage earners or those involved in the logistics division engaged in the company’s warehouse and delivery network. Amazon’s employee count witnessed a slight increase of 3 percent compared to 2024.
Amazon, meanwhile, also announced it will be launching a new range of devices this fall. Amazon’s head of devices, Panos Panay, revealed this while speaking to Bloomberg but didn’t share anything specific. There are likely to be new devices launched that include the entire spectrum of the market, from entry-level to the high-end premium segment. It is not known, though, if there are going to be any new Kindle models as well.
